The Beginning

SUMMER.

So here is the deal. I sucked at keeping up with my progression this summer. I have a ton of photos that I'm just gonna throw out there, so bear with me. I was lucky enough to be accepted into a summer program that allowed me to work with a grad student named Julia Feld. She is an amazing artist, as well as mentor, and I created a body of work that she advised me through building. The work I made was large- scale figurative sculptures. I used a white clay and stained them with red iron oxide and copper carbonate. The work was inspired by tribal dances and the idea that when we allow ourselves to emerge into a primal state of emotion, the physical expression is at its highest point of beauty and honesty. Here is the final piece of my Junior year! I posted the plans for it earlier. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. This piece is made up of the porcelain pieces I worked on throughout the quarter and the top piece is made of steel I bent and welded. I was going to use artificial lighting in the center of the piece, but I could not find a proper location to set that up. With permission from my ceramics teacher I was able to hang it in the window of the studio, where it will continue to reside until I am forced to take it down. I actually enjoy the natural light on it anyways. My only wish is that I could make more to fill the entire span of the window. 

Rain "Chandelier"

So it Worked! Kinda. The water didn't fall into the large center cone like I planned, because the plastic was not tight enough. It ended up pooling on the side of the plastic and making a part of the piece collapse and spill water. I enjoyed the result though. The self-destruction was nice and gave the piece a moment in time to exist in and move on from. The materials used were porcelain for the cones, plastic sheeting, and fishing line. Check out the amateur video I posted to understand how it dripped.

I started to practice hand- building and carving. Promises of improvement throughout the summer. :)

SocialOxygen (Collectiv)

Class Installation! Our instructor informed us that he got the opportunity to fill a gallery space on campus and that he wanted our whole class to be involved. You would think getting 12-14 people together to get a show up and running could be chaos, but it was actually a pretty good time. The group decided to recreate a project that was previously done by other members of group using painter's plastic and fans to create pockets or "bubbles" of air. We wanted to make an unknown and light-hearted environment that would not only inspire interaction with the material, but with other people as well. All in all, I think it was a wonderful success.
